Homemade ORS

As i've promised, so here's an entry on
"How to make a Home-Made-Oral-Rehydration-Solution"

The ingredients:
1. 1 litre of Water. Boiled and cooled.
{it is important to let the water to boil to disinfect it n let it cool appropriately,
making sure that the water is not exposed to lalat or what not.
Dont use hot water ye. As hot boiling water will decompose the sugar.}

2. 8 TEASPOONS of sugar

3. 1 TEASPOONS of table salt
{plz.. dont put too much of salt ye. first it may not taste good, n therefore
the child might not want to drink it. N 2ndly, in extreme cases,
too much salt may lead to convulsion/fit.
so the solution should taste like your tears.
kalau mcm terlebih masin, plz discard it n make a new one.}

Okey, now mixed these ingredients in a CLEANED container.

Bila nak minum?
After each bouts of diarrhoea...

How much?
preferably, more or less the same amout of fluid loss.
Mcm.. if the diarrhoea is about one cup full,
so bg laa about one cup juga..
Tp tak yah laa bg semua sekali gus. Sip by sip is fine.
a few tablespoon at a time.
If ada muntah2 juga, wait for about 15-20 mins,
then baru start giving the solution little by little.

** adults n kanak2 yg dh besar sket preferably drink about 3/4 - 1 litre/day until they are well.

** infant under 2 years old: around 1/4 - 1/2 of large cup after each diarrhoea.
**older children: 1/2 - 1 cup
after each diarrhoea.

What do u do with the extra solution??
you may keep them. refregerated MAX OF 24 HOURS sahaja.
after 24 hours, please discard ALL of the remainder.
The solution might grow bacteria ke, virus ke, yeast ke, fungus ke.
Sbb the solution contains sugar remember?
"Sugary" solution grows microbs faster. Nnt the diarrhoea tak berhenti pulak.

Note:
~ ORS does not stop the diarrhoea. It only replenish the salt loss with the diarrhoea.
~ Usually the diarrhoea is viral in origin, n therefore may resolve by itself. No need to take antibiotics.
~ plz continue feeding as usual.
~ DONT HESITATE to visit ur doctors if:
- ur child not able to drink or breastfeed or drink poorly.
- become sicker
- develops fever
- notice BLOOD in their stool.

Informations are gathered from Rehydration Project website
and
Paediatrics Protocol for Malaysian Hospital under Gastroenterology, Chapter 56: Acute Gastroenteritis.

plz leave a message if need further clarification ye.
Hope this post maybe beneficial. =))
